N/R: GYG EXPANDING GREEN PARKS IN TOLON AND SAVELUGU: WOMEN AT THE CENTER OF CLIMATE SMART AGRICULTURE

As the rains begin, Ghana Youth Guide [GYG] is expanding our established community green parks in Tolon and Savelugu under the Resilient Roots of Change intervention, implemented in partnership with DIB and CISU. These green parks are more than just farmland. They are community demonstration fields designed to equip women household farmers with practical, hands-on skills in sustainable climate-smart agriculture. Here, women learn and practice techniques like composting, mulching, organic pest control, water conservation, and improved seedbed preparation – all adapted to our changing climate.
Through R2C, we have seen clearly that women play a central role in agriculture and household food security in Northern Ghana. Yet they remain the most vulnerable to climate impacts. Erratic rainfall, prolonged dry spells, and land degradation hit women farmers hardest, often because they have limited access to training, resources, and decision-making spaces.
GYG is changing that. We continue to enhance women’s participation in sustainable climate-smart agriculture as a driver for social change. By placing women at the center of these green parks, we are building their resilience, improving household nutrition, and increasing income opportunities.
The parks in Tolon and Savelugu now serve as learning hubs where women test, adopt, and scale climate-smart practices. Knowledge flows peer-to-peer – from the demonstration plots to individual farms across the communities.
With the 2026 farming season underway, we are scaling up activities in the parks. Our field officers in Tolon and Savelugu are working closely with women groups to ensure timely planting, maintenance, and knowledge sharing throughout the season.
At GYG, we believe that when women farmers thrive, entire communities become more resilient. The R2C green parks are our commitment to that vision.
