The Ghana Youth Guide has established two Green Clubs in Tolon and Savelugu Senior High School. The formation of the school green club was done by the project staff led by the project coordinator Mr. Chentiwuni S.A Fatawu. The project staff formalize the formation of the green club through the authorities of the institution led by the headmaster and coordinated by the assistant headmaster in charge of academics through the department of Agric of the school. A total of fifteen (15) students (9 female and 6 mays) were formally selected to represent the school as members of the club under the organizations Resilient Roots of Change intervention which aims to empower theGhanaian Youth for Sustainable Agriculture in Northern Ghana.

Speaking to the students at the event, the project coordinator stated that, the Resilient Roots of Change (R2C) project is a two-year initiative to enhance climate resilience among vulnerable groups in Ghanaโ€™s Northern Region, including women, youth, visible minorities like the Fulanis and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). According to him, climate change had adverse effects on young people especially their development and called on the members of the school green club to be climate smart champions by engaging duty-bearers and community members in climate action and climate-smart agriculture. He also encourages the students to take action on environmental issues affecting their communities.

The coordinator highlighted the need for youth involvement in the fight against climate justice by stating that, the R2C intervention will serve as a way to sustain the advocacy and engagement efforts by the target group by way of protecting the rights of young people and vulnerable community members affected by climate change.

A board member of the organization Mr. shaban Amadu Alhassan who accompany the project staff during the formation of the school green club spoke on the issue of interest and called on the Green Club members to take the project as one of the opportunity in their lives and encouraged them to also own it to make a better living when it comes to agriculture and issues affecting their lives by asking them to get involved, and ended up with a quote โ€˜teach me and I will know, show me and I may remember, but involveย  me and I will understandโ€™.

Mr. Mohammed Tahidu the school Agric departmental head in his remarks commended GYG and its partners (CISU and DIB) for adding students among the intervention target group which he believes would go a long way to encourage students in agricultural practices for social change and livelihood empowerment.ย The assistant headmaster in charge of academics called on the selected students to promote climate justice, which he believes can work towards a more equitable and sustainable future for them.

There were series of discussions with the HoD and some teachers of the Agric department of the school about the R2C project in the school. The project staff together with the HoD of the Agric Department visited the School lands to inspect and also select the appropriate land for our Green Club project demonstration farms. The school Geen Club will also support the development of sustainable agricultural practices and habits among students in the school.

In Tolon senior High School, the project head of finance and a board member of GYG led the formation of the School Green Club where they held a meeting with the headmaster of the school. The school welcomed the intervention and pledged their full support by noting that the club will serve as a reference point of knowledge, skills and information for the student body when it comes to sustainable agricultural practices.
